Awaji Island was once known as the "Island of Flowers, Milk, and Oranges," where citrus cultivation flourished. At that time, it was mainly Awaji Island's endemic species called "Naruto orange" that was produced. Since its discovery about 300 years ago, this rare species has been cultivated only on the island and has remained almost as the original species. In the old days, the souvenir of Awaji Island was the Naruto orange. The high price of Naruto oranges was high until around the first half of the Showa period (1926-1989)," says producer Mr. Wakamiya. Later, the production volume declined, and the survival of the industry was threatened, but the local community rallied together to revive the industry! In 2018, the name was changed to "Awajishima Naruto Orange" to promote this rare species as an Awaji Island brand, and a new step forward was taken.
